About Penha Longa

Penha Longa sits in the hills of Sintra, inside the Sintra-Cascais Natural Park, west of Lisbon. Its story begins in 1355, when Friar Vasco Martins founded a monastery here for the Hieronymite order. In the 16th century King Manuel I added a royal palace, and Penha Longa became a summer retreat of the Portuguese court. The monasteries were closed in 1834, and today the estate is The Ritz-Carlton, Penha Longa Resort.

For a wedding, few venues in Portugal offer this range under one roof: the 16th-century chapel inside the monastery, the Núncio Garden, a 16th-century garden once used for contemplation, the Sala dos Arcos in the monastery’s former stables (receptions of up to around 250 guests), the Salão Nobre in the old palace, and the Coroa Ballroom, the largest space, for up to around 700 guests.

Filming a wedding at Penha Longa

Penha Longa is the venue we have filmed most. That matters on the day: we know where the light falls in the Núncio Garden in the late afternoon, how long it takes guests to walk from the monastery to the reception, and where a camera can stand without appearing in anyone’s photographs.

Many of the weddings we film here are multi-day Indian celebrations, with the haldi, mehndi, sangeet, baraat and pheras spread across different spaces of the resort over two or three days. We plan the coverage of each event with your planner months before you arrive, so every ceremony is covered from the right angle and nothing overlaps.

For the Same Day Edit, the ballrooms are ideal: we edit during dinner and screen the film for your guests before the dancing starts.
